Dassault Systèmes is proud to have been the chosen technology partner of The Institutes for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship (The IRIS) and Cebu Technological University (CTU) for the UNIVERSITIES 4.0 event, “Ushering in the New Age of Enlightenment and Collaboration in Philippine R&D”, from July 4 to 5, 2019, in Cebu City.
In line with the government of the Philippines’ drive to upskill and empower the future workforce with digital skills, the two-day event brought together top academic, industry and government leaders in the country to discuss ideas on how to cultivate innovation in education and research programs.
Poised to become the Philippines’ “innovation island”, Cebu has been developing its tech start-up eco-system and encouraging local businesses to adopt digital technologies. Delegates had the opportunity to experience Industry 4.0 technologies and the power of digital transformation through hands-on demonstrations of Dassault Systèmes industry solutions at the 3DEXPERIENCE Playground exhibition area at UNIVERSITIES4.0.
This blog post summarises the discussions that took place during the Plenary and the exhibition zones of the 3DEXPERIENCE Playground.
THE PLENARY – DAY ONE
Our eminent list of speakers at UNIVERSITIES4.0 included:
- Rosein A. Ancheta, Jr., Ph.D., President, Cebu Technological University (CTU)
- Rafaelita M. Aldaba, Ph.D., Undersecretary – Competitiveness and Innovation, Department of Trade and Industry
- Rowena Cristina L. Guevara, Ph.D., Undersecretary for Research and Development, Department of Science and Technology
- Tirso A. Ronquillo, Ph.D., President, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges
- John T. Lee Chairman Aerospace Industries Association of the Philippines
- Daniel C. Lachica, Ph.D. President Semiconductors and Electronics Industries in the Philippines Inc.
- Reynaldo B. Vea, Ph.D., President, Mapua University
- Raymond Girard Tan, Ph.D., Vice-Chancellor for Research, De La Salle University
- Maria Cynthia Rose B. Bautista, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs, University of the Philippines
- Napoleon K. Juanillo, Jr., Ph.D., Convenor, The Institutes for Research, Innovation, and Scholarship (The IRIS)
I took part in the panel session on “Imagining the Future of Sustainable Innovations” with Napoleon K. Juanillo, Convenor of the IRIS. During the discussions, we spoke about how pressing socio-economic challenges faced by the world, such as climate change, over-crowding in cities, depleting natural resources and dying eco-systems, have advanced the quest for sustainable innovation in the way businesses approach production, processes and their long-term growth objectives. I am of the view that sustainability will be an important driver of innovation in Industry 4.0, as businesses will be challenged to conceptualise how limited resources, such as energy and materials, can be more efficiently deployed in the product development process.
Other pertinent topics discussed during the other panel sessions included strategies to enhance STEM curriculum in universities, as STEM forms an important foundation for students to acquire the relevant digital skills of the future, as well as ideas to cultivate the innovation mindset in learning.
At the end of the plenary on Day One, signatories from The IRIS and Cebu Technological University signed a declaration to galvanise university-industry partnerships that will cultivate the Philippines’ workforce of the future for the Industry 4.0 era. The signing of the declaration was witnessed by Dassault Systèmes’ AP South Managing Director, Masaki Sox Konno.
THE PLENARY – DAY TWO
On Day Two, delegates further engaged in discussions on the impact of Industry 4.0 in key areas of academia and research, particularly “University Leadership and Governance”, “Innovation in State Universities and Colleges”, “University-Industry Partnerships”, “Standards and Metrics of Performance in University Research and Development” and the “Trans-Disciplinary Curriculum of the Future”.
Masaki Sox Konno presented on Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform, showcasing how the platform has enabled sustainable innovation in companies making headway in areas such as energy transition, sustainable mobility and smart cities. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform is therefore able to bring new capabilities to educators and students who want to learn from global best practices in digital transformation and be equipped with the digital skills and know-how for increased employment opportunities in the new global economy.
Following the presentation, Masaki Sox Konno engaged in a Q&A with the delegates. One of the questions focused on the type of training programs to upskill Filipino students and develop a strong workforce of the future, and another on the willingness among universities to explore working with the industry to implement learning programs that will benefit Cebu and the Philippines.
Also raised during the discussions were the contributions of the creative arts, humanities and social sciences to the innovation enterprise, as well as the top skills required of the future workforce in the Industry 4.0 environment.
THE 3DEXPERIENCE PLAYGROUND AT UNIVERSITIES4.0
Dassault Systèmes collaborated with partners, MDC Group and Computrends, in the Philippines to set up a series of immersive demos that showcased how academics and students can gain digital capabilities and know-how in Industry 4.0 technologies with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
