Themed “Innovation and Transformation of Oil & Gas Production Facilities towards Industry 4.0”, the FFPM 2019 is supported by SKK Migas, the Indonesian Government’s Special Task Force dedicated to promoting the upstream Oil & Gas business in Indonesia.

During the three-day event, Dassault Systèmes’ technical experts, together with our partner Navita Origo Solutions, demonstrated the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to top industry decision-makers and discussed digital transformation best practices in achieving optimal Oil & Gas production.

At the Plenary, I spoke on how improving management and execution of capital projects can help oil & gas companies optimize operational efficiency during a presentation on “Capital Project Governance & Management for the Industry 4.0 era”.

The increasing risks of Oil & Gas capital projects in Indonesia

Indonesia’s oil & gas industry is transitioning, amid volatile global oil prices, pressures on current reserves and challenges in exploring for new reserves. Due to these factors, capital project risk for oil & gas businesses has increased exponentially. Any equipment failure, operating error or an extra hour of plant downtime can potentially cost a company several millions of dollars. In addition, upstream production costs have escalated, as new reserves are often located in geographically remote areas.

These dynamics are compelling oil & gas companies to find new ways to optimize processes, increase operational efficiency and reduce risks of their capital projects.

The virtual plant, powered by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, acts as an information repository, where knowledge and lessons learnt from previous projects can be re-used and re-applied to benefit future projects. All stakeholders have access to the same “single source of truth”, enabling visibility of plant workflows across multidisciplinary teams, which helps to eliminate siloes and facilitate collaboration.

Uptime is always a priority in managing an oil & gas plant. As the virtual plant is linked to real-time data fed from the real plant, operators and maintenance workers can capture and manage varied equipment maintenance issues with immediacy, assign priorities and determine if escalation is required. This allows early detection and speed resolution of any potential operational problem.

The platform also captures and consolidates a list of capital project risks, which are then integrated into a “risk waterfall” graphic report for operators to analyse the risk mitigation process and make any necessary adjustments to reduce risks. This data-driven approach to risk management can further provide an invisible layer of governance to ensure successful project deliverables.

In addition to mitigating risks, containing costs is critical to the business success of any large-scale capital project.
