Why You Should Attend Science in the Age of Experience

The digital revolution has not left many industries left untouched, and mining is no exception. With technology such as autonomous vehicles, aerial surveying equipment and the development of new ways to extract minerals from the earth, we have seen the beginnings of innovative transformation in the mining and natural resources industry.

Together with our sister brands SIMULIA and BIOVIA, we will explore these topics further under the broader theme of Science in the Age of Experience, where science, engineering and technology will join together to simulate a better world and better ways of doing business.

Industry experts from around the world will gather in Chicago for the biggest scientific event of the year. From May 16-18, Dassault Systèmes will present an expanded simulation program that includes simulation trends, industry thought leadership and technical content.

As one of the main brands leading Science in the Age of Experience, we will be promoting themes around the scientific value we can provide to the mining industry. The GEOVIA breakout sessions will include themes such as:

  • Next generation of rapid parametric geological modelling
  • Geological modelling and geomechanical characterization for underground infrastructure design in urban environments
  • Image analytics applied to subsurface modeling
  • Use of robust design in the definition of the production scale for open pit mining
  • Automated Cave Back Optimization and Mine Planning
  • and more to be confirmed!

So what are the top reasons you should attend Science in the Age of Experience?

  1. Rapid Parametric Geological Modeling Session

Mining companies are now able to deploy variety of different sensors that can provide real time instrumentation of mining exploration and operations including: measuring while drilling, measuring while operating, autonomous vehicles, robots, and UAVs. This is the “Mining Internet of Things.”

Gustavo Pilger, R&D Technology Director, GEOVIA, Dassault Systèmes will be presenting on this topic. He will describe the conceptual building blocks the app is based on and outlines what will become possible by having the mining value chain modelled through the Semantic Modelling framework fully integrated into a business platform.

  2. Innovative Approaches to Rapid Creation of Geological Models

We will present an approach combining technology pioneered in the Life Sciences domain with traditional geological modelling techniques. For example, how photographic images and remote sensing data are converted into geometrical shapes using GEOVIA and BIOVIA applications. Presented by Peter Graham, Director of Business Experience (UK) at Dassault Systèmes, this session will illustrate the workflows involved, showcase datasets and illustrate typical results using BIOVIA Pipeline Pilot and GEOVIA Surpac.

  3. Underground Infrastructure Design Session

It is intuitive that underground civil engineering infrastructure designs require the characterization of the local geology for critical engineering input. Specifically, the sub-surface characterization informs the engineering complexity involved that directly reflects on safety and costs. Although the geology is generally sufficiently described , the geomechanical characteristics of the sub-surface are often poorly assessed. This is in part due to the convoluted workflow involved.

This session presents a simple workflow for combining GEOVIA Surpac and SIMULIA Abaqus for 3D geomechanical characterization of the sub-surface and the evaluation of its dynamic interaction with the excavation. The workflow is illustrated with a case study involving a series of underground infrastructure designs in an urban environment.

  4. Open Pit Exploitation Session

José Eugênio Saravia from the Dassault Systèmes Natural Resources team in Colombia will present an alternative approach to the traditional nested pit exploitation sequencing. This new approach considers the application of an additional factor related to the starting point of the exploitation and to the sequence direction.

The aim of Jose’s paper is to assess the impact of applying a starting point search, of determining the exploitation orientation and of selecting a high-performance location, over the value of a mineral deposit.

  5. New Approach to Block Caving

Block Caving is a high risk method largely due to the lack of consistency and confidence in the current geotechnical model and mine plan. Daniel Villa, Director of the Caving Business Unit, GEOVIA at Dassault Systèmes, will present a new approach where we can couple geotechnical constraints with the mine plan to forecast and optimize cave growth strategies while reducing uncertainty levels.

The benefits expected from this approach include reducing financial risks, improving accuracy of production guidance, quantifying and communicating uncertainty and enabling transparency, among others.

  6. Talk to GEOVIA Technical Experts 1-1

During Science in the Age of Experience, technical experts from GEOVIA, SIMULIA and BIOVIA will be available to answer any questions you have, or if you simply want to have a chat about the presentations covered during the event and your thoughts on innovative approaches to mining.

  7. Experience the 3DS Playground

From complete 3D models of a living human heart to a virtual readout of an oil field in the North Sea, witness the future of scientific research at the 3DS Playground, an interactive exhibition featuring experiences and immersive demos.

  8. Hear from the CEO of Dassault Systèmes

Our CEO Bernard Charlès will present the future vision of 3DEXPERIENCE at the opening address, so don’t miss out!

  9. Meet and hear from other Dassault Systèmes customers

Many of our customers are thought leaders in their chosen field and they’ll all be under one roof at Science in the Age of Experience – hear their presentations and network with scientific professionals from companies such as Airbus, ExxonMobil, Electrolux, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, GE, Honeywell, Hyundai, Motorola and Microsoft. They may not be mining companies, but there are innovations and common principles that can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining.

As Henry Ford of Ford Motor Company once said, “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress; but working together is success.” Working together and cross-functional collaboration is critical to the success of any operation, particularly in mining.

We look forward to seeing you at Science in the Age of Experience.
