Displaying Block-Triangulation Intersections with Greater Precision

It’s Tip Tuesday! Today’s post comes from Hayley Manning, one of our Technical Customer Support Consultants.

GEOVIA GEMS™ users can display the boundary of blocks that intersect the boundary of selected triangulations with greater precision for presentation purposes. You can increase the granularity by changing the setting of the needle integration level to a maximum of 9×9 needles per block. The illustration below shows the difference between displaying 2×2 and 4×4 needle integration levels.

To show and define blocks-triangulation intersections, follow these steps:

1.  Open a block model, and define a block selection.
2.  Right click the attribute of the block model that you want to display, and then click Show. You can display as many attributes as you want.
3.  On the Block menu, point to Display, and then click Needle Intersections, or in the Project View area, right-click the block model, and then select Show Needle Intersections.
4.  Select a single block workspace or use all opened block workspaces.

5.  Enter the details of the needle intersections:

  • Needle integration level (to a maximum of 9×9).
  • Display as (blocks or bars).
  • Needle direction, to set the direction of the needles as they pass through the block model.

6.  Triangulations already open or selected will be displayed in the list. To select triangulations, do one of the following:

  • To change the selection of triangulations, click Select.
  • To open a triangulation workspace or to add more triangulations, click Open.
  • To open all the triangulations, go to the next step.

7.  If necessary, update the intersection method for surfaces.
8.  Click OK.

If the geological data changes, you can easily and quickly update the needle integration display of the blocks by running the procedure again.  As this feature is to improve the display only, the values are not saved, and GEMS’ underlying needling calculations are unaffected. When you display blocks using needle integration, it does not modify the attributes of the blocks, nor does it affect volumetrics reports or updated triangulations from a bock model.
