How to rename an old GEMS project for GEOVIA PCBC/PCSLC.
Having several copies of the same GEMS caving project with different names can be useful when you want to archive an old project or simply rename a copy of the GEMS project to a more appropriate name.
It can also be useful if you want to run different tasks without affecting the main GEMS project database.
Today’s tip will demonstrate the quickest and easiest way to create a new GEMS project with your preferred name. This process can be done for both GEMS Access and GEMS SQL projects.
For this example the existing project that needs to be renamed is called Maxum_SLC_2019 and needs to be renamed to PCSLC_Training2020.
Step 1 | First create a new GEMS project by selecting the menu command
File > New > Project and follow the prompts.
Step 2 | Select the Express setup option
Step 3 | Enter the name of the new GEMS project to be created.
Take note of the file path of the GEMS project. This can be changed to the location you prefer.
Step 4 | Enter a description for the project
Step 5 | Select the database type. To create an Access database, select Access 2007.
To create a SQL database, select the SQL server version installed on your machine and enter the server instance name.
Step 6 | Create the project with no templates.
Step 7 | Create the project without grade names
Step 8 | Select the Test button and then the Finish button
Step 9 | The new GEMS project will open
Step 10 | Exit GEMS
Step 11 | Browse to the location of GEMS project and locate the three .accdb database files created.
Step 12 | The GD_.accdb database is where the data is saved.
The GD_.accdb database created is empty and needs to be replaced with the existing database file that contains data.
Delete the GD_.accdb file.
Step 13 | Copy the GD_.accdb database from the old project (GD_Maxum_SLC_2019.accdb) to the new project location and rename the file to the new project name (PCSLC_Training2020 .accdb).
Note: For SQL projects, instead of copying and pasting you would need to restore the old GD_ database backup file to the new project using SQL Server Management Studio.
Step 14 | Next, copy all the folders and files from the old project into the new project.
There is no need to copy the old databases and old .gpr file as the new project contains these files.
Step 15 | Open GEMS
Step 16 | You now have a copy of the old project but with a new name.
