IMERYS teams up with GEOVIA

Clay is used in far more than just dinnerware—tires, shoes, crayons, paper and even toothpaste contain types of clay and clay carbonates. GEOVIA customer, IMERYS, extracts, processes and markets kaolin, bore clay and calcium carbonate.

Last year, GEOVIA visited IMERYS’ mine in Coalville UK to document how GEOVIA Services helped IMERYS maximise the value of their GEOVIA software to determine their life-of-mine.

IMERYS’ geologists and mining engineers need to have a good understanding of the nature and extent of the kaolin reserves so that they can design their mine plans. This is very important to enable IMERYS to not only meet its customers’ expectations, but also to be able to meet our stakeholders’ expectations and in particular, our neighbours and the local community,” said Chris Varcoe, Mineral Services Manager.

IMERYS uses GEOVIA Surpac™ as its fundamental software for mine planning; GEOVIA Whittle™ for various estimations; and GEOVIA MineSched™ to model clay production and to control the optimal extraction of this vast primary kaolin deposit. As IMERYS embarked on a new drilling campaign, it was particularly important for them to make the best use of the resource and produce an economic and sustainable life of mine.

GEOVIA’s MineSched and Whittle experts developed specific solutions that answered IMERYS’ questions and pushed the boundaries of what GEOVIA software can provide.

IMERYS viewed working with GEOVIA’s Services team as a partnership that “showed us the maximum we could get from each of the solutions that we were already using and also how to join all those solutions together,” said Mark Scrutton, Senior Mining Manager – Carbonates. “This was the first project we used to link everything together. We wanted a solution that, in Surpac, represents the geological and the reserve and the resource estimation, but also, with Whittle, to allow us to do economic optimisations and also at the end, with MineSched, that allows us to schedule in terms of blending and in terms of MPV management.
