The Importance of Ranking in Dump Scheduling

It’s Tip Tuesday! Today’s post comes from Dereck Prince, one of our Principal Mining Consultants, also known as the Minex and Stratified Deposit expert.

The Dump Scheduling and Haulage Planning module in GEOVIA Minex™ provides you with a way to effectively control one of the largest costs associated with the mining of stratified deposits – the removal and haulage of waste. With this module, you can rank dumps to control sequence and accommodate selection and ranking by bench, strip and block across multiple dumps.

Critical to reducing waste extraction costs, waste material must be placed in the mined-out area (“haulback” or “backfilling”) or in a surface (external) dump. To avoid congestion and the possible spoil slides that endanger lives and property, sufficient space must exist between the mining face and the toe of the advancing dump (“lag distance”). The Dump Scheduling and Haulage Planning module enables you to prioritise, or “rank,” the in-pit dump higher than all other dumps. Dumps with a smaller priority number are filled before those with a larger priority number.
