Look How Far We’ve Come…and Where We Are Going

In our recent edition of Inside GEOVIA, we sat down with Andrew Pyne, newly appointed Senior Vice President of Mining and one of our longest standing employees to learn of time here and his thoughts for the future. Below is a excerpt from the article.

Today, over 10,000 GEOVIA Surpac licenses are used in over 120 countries around the world. It may surprise many customers to learn that some members of our current staff have been with us for the entire journey since we were just a small Western Australian. As seven years is the average job tenure for an Australian employee, we must be doing something right.

How did you first land the job at Surpac Software International Pty? What were the challenges you faced as a ‘newbie’ then?

AP: A Surpac employee that I had worked with previously said it was a great place to work. After a week on the job, having been given manuals and asked to learn the software with no one around to ask for help, I wasn’t quite sure I agreed with him. In my second week, I was with a colleague at a coal mine in Borneo, however, where I learned a lot and had some success. After a month, I was pretty sure I was in a good group. 16 years later, I know that’s still the case.

Now that Gemcom has been acquired by Dassault Systèmes, how does the transition compare to the Gemcom acquisition of Surpac back in 2007?

AP: Gemcom and Surpac were very similar companies in terms of size. I was initially concerned to be acquired by a ‘competitor’, but it quickly became apparent that Gemcom was a very well-run company; it has proven to be a great journey. The acquisition by Dassault Systèmes is a game changer, as their sheer size, R&D engine, and innovative culture is very different – yet exciting – for us.

What do you think will be the biggest transformation our customers will experience from the transition to GEOVIA?

AP: Many of the limits we faced operating as a smaller business have been removed. Dassault Systèmes is innovative to its core and will invest in new ideas, which will lead to great changes for the industry through the new technological solutions we deploy.
