Maintaining Correct Hole Order on Borehole Cross Sections in GEOVIA Minex

If you are a geologist wanting to create a cross-section through boreholes in GEOVIA Minex, you can display boreholes in the 3D Design window, then follow the below steps.

1. Use the Borehole DB > Select Boreholes > Pick Holes option.
Geologists should carefully choose the holes they want in the order they want (Figure 1), and save a parameter (Figure 2) in order to come back to this task at a later date/time.

2. Create a cross-section From Boreholes and use Select Holes to choose the same holes saved as a parameter from the previous step. Unfortunately, even though the hole order of the retrieved parameter is exactly as you had chosen earlier, the list in the Section – Create table is now sorted in alphabetical order (Figure 3)!

Note that this automatic reordering of the holes will also take place if you use the List Holes option and select them from the window in the order you want. If you Digitize them from screen, the correct order is maintained.

If you unwittingly proceed to create the cross-section without carefully reviewing the order of the holes in the Section – Create table, the resulting cross-section will be incorrect and look like Figure 4 below:
3. You will need to correctly order the boreholes in the Section – Create table before clicking Apply > OK to create the cross-section. You can follow these steps:

  • Right-click the last hole in the original list shown in Figure 2 and choose Move Row to Top (in this example, hole BNBG10 is already at the top)
  • Right-click the penultimate hole (BNBY53C) and again choose Move Row to Top
  • Continue in this manner until you have finally selected the first hole (BNBY73C) and moved it to the top

The boreholes are now in the correct order (Figure 5) as they were stored in the Select Holes parameter in Figure 2.

4. Proceed to create the cross-section as usual. The result will now be correct as shown in Figure 6 below.

This “trick” or technique is handy because it’s not restricted to just the borehole selection table, but can be used to reorder almost any table in Minex (with a few exceptions).
