In an earlier blog post, we introduced the upcoming enhancements in Surpac 6.8.1 and talked about how to perform editing of point clouds. Today, we will look at point cloud meshing in 6.8.1.
You can run point cloud mesh to create a string and dtm of your mining stockpile. Note that if you do not need a subset of the original point cloud save in a point cloud format (asc or txt) you can skip “point cloud edit” and immediately run “point cloud mesh” Depending on what you are trying to achieve, this workflow may be suitable, however, the end result of the point cloud mesh function is a string and dtm file. No other point cloud file is created during this process: Run Surface > Mesh tools > Point cloud mesh
The same options for creating a subset of the point cloud in the “point cloud edit” function exist on the point cloud mesh form in the mesh area drop down box. As we have already created the point cloud file we need, I will use the layer option. This will mesh all points in the current layer, which must be a point cloud layer i.e. asc, txt, las, etc.
If other “Mesh area” options are chosen, a new feature that allows the reduction of point density during meshing is available. This is very helpful if you have an over saturation of points which may not be needed to achieve the required accuracy depending on the task you are performing.
The result is a new dtm layer called stk_mesh (as per the below image):
