The Rapidly Growing Importance of Mining Software

You may have recently noticed that Dassault Systèmes GEOVIA is currently gracing the cover of this month’s Mining Magazine. As well, Marni Rabassó our Vice President of Product Management shares her thoughts regarding how software can be used to tackle the many challenges facing the mining industry.

With the climbing costs and variable commodity prices, mining companies must now focus on achieving better operational performance. From shareholder pressure to increase returns, to overcoming revenue challenges that have not kept pace with costs for nearly 20 years, mining companies need to find ways to control costs, improve safety and increase efficiencies.

Software plays an increasingly more important role as mining companies seek to maximise the value of all of their mineral assets and to communicate more effectively with their internal stakeholders. Technologies proven in other industries can be applied to mining execution management. By employing a holistic, horizontal view of the mining value chain, new opportunities for improvements can be uncovered. Such technologies would make it possible to model and simulate both the mineral resource and production processes through to delivery of the product to clients, and find new opportunities for increasing efficiency and productivity.

We are continuing to extend the Dassault Systèmes technology footprint into mining allowing our customers to simulate more components of their operations before they go into production to ensure they deliver an optimal economic return. Additionally, we are seeking to bring Dassault Systèmes’ advanced 3D collaboration tools into mining. This will enable corporate or central locations to provide greater assistance to mine sites and help them develop and manage their mining operations more effectively. We are also looking to enable the mining industry to embed best practices through capturing their workflows and standardising them through workflow management software.
