Located in Kostomuksha, Russia, Severstal Karelsky Okatysh (Severstal) uses GEOVIA Surpac™ and GEOVIA MineSched™ to run multiple scenarios, in a short amount of time, for their open pit mine.
With 4 open pits and 25 active faces, Severstal needs to understand both the quantity and quality of ore being delivered. Unlike traditional mines, Severstal averages a quality ore percentage of 24%, which is incredibly challenging to achieve due to the high levels of sulphur in their mine.
In 2006, Severstal started using Surpac and MineSched to support mining operations, planning and data accumulation. Since implementing these applications, both losses and contamination have been significantly reduced thanks to better planning. They can now track dilution, recovery, and volumes in the pillars of locked mineral reserves. Once this data has been compiled and processed, block models are built in Surpac, which are then submitted to the Mine Planning Department. Using MineSched, they quickly plan various scheduling scenarios and then select the best option to move forward.
Watch this video and learn how this large, open pit mine uses Surpac and MineSched to remain competitive in their industry.
