Today’s post comes from Ben Farquharson, our Regional Vice President Australia.
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE FORUM at the famous and historic Raffles Hotel in Singapore. As part of the Asia Pacific South region, it was the first time that GEOVIA has attended and presented at the FORUM. GEOVIA had representatives from both our Australian and Indonesian offices, and were fortunate to play the lead role in the Industry break-out sessions, representing the Natural Resources Industry alongside other Dassault Systèmes brands including SOLIDWORKS and SIMULIA.
It was a great opportunity for me to interact with customers, colleagues and partners as well as see, first-hand, the amazing technology and thought leadership in the Dassault Systèmes community across Asia Pacific South.
There were many highlights for me at the FORUM, but some of the more memorable moments included Philippe Forestier’s (Executive Vice President Global Affairs & Communities) presentation around the Dassault Systèmes vision along with the unveiling of the latest acquisition, Accelrys, and subsequent new brand creation of BIOVIA.
What really impressed upon me about BIOVIA were the possibilities and potential that this brand represents in transforming the scientific and medical industries. My immediate thought was WOW! If we are able to take data points of the human body and effectively model and simulate the way it works, using 3D technology, including major organs like the heart or brain, it could open up the possibility for better, more accurate diagnosis of disease and treatment possibilities. If all medical practitioners and scientific experts had access to 3D technology that could accurately pinpoint problems and cures, it could revolutionise the practise of our medical and scientific industries, improving human lives. Our global social environments and life expectancy could be transformed as a result. These are amazing thoughts and it made me very proud to be part of a group that is investing in these businesses and industries.
From the perspective of the Natural Resources industry, some of the key points that were made about the mining industry that GEOVIA represented include:
- The mining industry has changed. Consolidation, reduction of waste and, ultimately, changes in investment are well and truly under way, as declining prices and escalating costs have caught up with businesses globally.
- A focus on productivity improvement – “working smarter not harder” was a prominent theme at the event, as identified by GEOVIA customer, Mt Gibson Iron Ore’s Head of Technical Services.
- Providing a “window on the operations” – an industry focus on data capture, processing and management – is a key focus. Try and help companies understand their operations better, so that they can make faster, better and more accurate decisions.
- Choosing the right technology and business partner to achieve productivity improvement can be challenging. True partnership develops over time and a trusted brand involves not just the technology piece, but also the people and processes that support it as well.
- Dassault Systèmes operates across the entire mining value chain with technology solutions available for many different environments and situations, including the design of buildings, equipment and plant. We had good examples of where SOLIDWORKS and SIMULIA both fit into the industry, but the potential for other brands is also significant.
