At the recent 3DEXPERIENCE FORUM in Singapore, we sat down with Fransiskus Nugroho, Senior Manager GEOVIA Indonesia for a quick Q&A regarding how technology can transform the mining industry. While his observations relate specifically to Indonesia, many of insights are applicable worldwide.
Given the slump in oil and commodity prices, what do you think Indonesian miners can do to address the current challenges and innovate?
Miners should leverage advanced technology from other industries such as aerospace, manufacturing and transportation. These best practices should be applied to the mining industry to help survive the downturn and create a culture of digital, lean and agile businesses.
The Indonesian Government has currently banned ore exports overseas. How do you think this has affected the mining industry?
The export ban is certainly hurting our mining industry because the supply and demand in the market is changing. We have now been replaced by the Philippines as the top nickel exporter to China and our share of global nickel production has dropped to only 10% in 2014. Although this means the short term may be painful for Indonesian miners and for nickel prices, I believe this is the “refining period” that will determine the survival of the fittest miners and their ability to streamline by adopting innovative technology and processes.
How do you think technology from Dassault Systèmes and GEOVIA can transform the Indonesian mining industry?
Current regulations stipulate that miners are required to build a smelter or refinery in order to export mineral ores. With this in mind, it is critical for miners to leverage Dassault Systèmes technology such as Lean Mine Construction to add value to the mining industry, whether it’s accelerating the creation of smelters, streamlining mine operations or establishing efficient business processes.
The recent release of Surpac 6.7 features improved resources estimation and performance enhancements. How does this benefit Indonesian customers?
Our customers have the added benefit of time savings and performance improvements with Surpac 6.7, which enables geologists and engineers to see faster results of larger models with greater coverage. In a difficult mining climate like this, any productivity and efficiency improvements can certainly go a long way in helping miners lead the competition.
