Today’s post comes from Steve Carter, our Chief Technology Officer.
Last week I had the pleasure of delivering the closing address at Dassault Systèmes’ inaugural Natural Resources FORUM. Hosted at the Regency Hyatt Hotel in Perth, Australia, the choice of location was a subtle acknowledgement to the importance of Perth as a key center for the Australian Mining Industry. As well, it highlighted the historical relevance of Surpac, GEOVIA’s Geology and Mine Planning (GMP) product which was conceived in Perth in 1982, and is now the most widely used GMP software in the world.
It is now just over two years since Dassault Systèmes acquired Gemcom Software and created GEOVIA, a brand focused on modeling and simulating the PLANET. Although GEOVIA originated in the mining industry, it will expand to other sectors of the Natural Resources industry over time.
The principal objective of the FORUM was to introduce our customers and partners in the mining industry to technology from other Dassault Systèmes brands. Since the acquisition, our message to the mining industry is we now have the vision, capability – both technology and people – and EXPERIENCE to help the mining industry reduce costs, improve productivity and profitability. This claim is backed by many successful stories across a range of industries serviced by Dassault Systèmes.
Attendance at the FORUM was very good, an indication of both the broad interest in and appetite for a better way of mining resources. The agenda included content on topics that spanned a number of Dassault Systèmes brands including presentations by CATIA, SIMULIA, DELMIA and GEOVIA. There was great support from both Dassault Systèmes customers and staff to deliver informative presentations about technology relevant to mining.
This FORUM was eye-opening as it educated many on the capabilities of Dassault Systèmes technology, reiterated by a video that showcased the impact of Dassault Systèmes technology across a range of industries.
Throughout the event, I discussed these presentations with a number of attendees. Without exception, people were astonished to learn of the impact and success Dassault Systèmes has had in other industries. There was an expectation, indeed a strong desire, to see the same positive impact on the mining industry.
Of course there were many questions during and after sessions regarding how this promise translates to the mining industry in terms of technology solutions, and when the industry can begin realizing the promise of these changes. In just a few short months, Dassault Systèmes will be talking to the mining industry about the next step along this journey, so be sure to watch this space, and check back often for more information.
