Unveiling GEOVIA Surpac 6.8 with Point Cloud Capabilities

Today, we introduce GEOVIA Surpac 6.8, our new release supporting open pit and underground operations and exploration projects of all types. Surpac 6.8 now offers the ability to import and mesh point clouds – geo-referenced points picked up from LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) scanning or photogrammetry.

Point cloud data can be imported into Surpac and used to create surface or solids models. The applications of this feature are diverse, as users can now import topographical and underground cavity data to be rendered with color attributes and subsequently converted to a mesh for modelling or volumetric work.

“This is ideal for visualizing complex 3D objects and structures, in particular for surveying and recording information in unsafe areas such as underground mines. This point cloud technology is delivered natively inside Surpac 6.8, thus providing immediate value to all maintained GEOVIA Surpac customers.” says Raoul Jacquand, GEOVIA CEO.

Mining companies are already importing, processing, and analyzing point cloud data from vendors operating in the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) photogrammetry and LiDAR mapping space. With GEOVIA Surpac 6.8, they will not only able to reduce costs significantly by replacing ground survey with UAV survey, but also manage and manipulate this rich data in-house in an intuitive and agile manner instead of relying on third parties.

“Using GEOVIA Surpac 6.8, users can import large point clouds – up to a few hundred million points, representing files several gigabytes large – with no compromise on graphical performance, thanks to the implementation of technology developed within Dassault Systèmes, and stitch together multiple surveys,” says Raoul.

Additionally, Surpac 6.8 includes support for the Wavefront OBJ textured mesh file format, the mining industry’s most widely supported texture definition file format produced by nearly all scanning hardware providers. Companies are now able to import OBJ files directly into Surpac and use them to identify structural features and rock formations.

By using imported point cloud data and GEOVIA Surpac 6.8 together, mining companies achieve several key benefits such as:

  • Accuracy – Increased details and accuracy as millions of points are captured automatically and available
  • Time – Rapid processing and analyzing of survey raw data, resulting in more efficient methods of reconciling earthmoving works
  • Cost – Reduction in operational costs related to ground survey and slope monitoring, due to automation of these tasks using Surpac 6.8 in combination with regular data cloud updates
  • Safety – Minimized time spent by personnel in hazardous environments to map the rocks compared to conventional methods

What’s New in GEOVIA Surpac 6.8

  • Import and mesh point clouds from third-party instruments such as drones and laser scanners in both surface and underground operations
  • Import file formats such as LAS, XYZ and ASC
  • Visualization of the mine as points with level of detail or texture-mapped OBJ files (an open source geometry file format)
  • Dynamically meshing 2D and 3D
  • Selection and snapping enhancements
  • Noise reduction through cleanup of point clouds and reduce outliers
  • Deviation analysis to report both positive and negative deviation through the use of a color gradient
