Today’s post comes from Stephanie Mair, one of our Knowledge Mining Consultants.
The Borehole Distance Gridding function in GEOVIA Minex™ is used to compute grids based on borehole distance by assigning the distance from the closest borehole. The grids are used to identify gaps in drilling programs and in generating Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) compliant resources.
To run this function, just follow these steps:
- Open and plot a borehole database.
- Choose SeamModel > Borehole Distance Gridding.
- Define the Gridding area by typing in the extents, digitizing the area on screen or using an existing grid as reference.
- Choose the mesh size, which corresponds to the length of the grid cells in the X and Y directions.
- Click on the Select Seams button to choose all available seams or a subset of seams.
- In the Borehole Data Selection area, specify which seam pick classes (Input, Estimated, or Interpolated) to use during the calculation. The default Scan distance of 2000 will result in a search area with radius equivalent to 2000 meters or feet.
- Type in a grid suffix (ex.DS) and select an existing data directory (DD) to be used when saving the grids.
Once you have created the borehole distance grids, you can display them in a useful manner:
- Choose Grid > Display.
- Select the distance grid from the correct data directory.
- In the Plot Style section, check on the options (a) Solid and (b) Contours.
- In the Plot Color section, choose the Color Shade mode and click on the Setup button.
- Enter 3 ranges in the dialog box and specify the cut-offs. For example, in the image below:
- 250 = red (ex. measured)
- 500 = green (ex. indicated)
- 1000 = blue (ex. inferred)
You can also convert the grid contour lines to Geometry data:
- Choose Grid > Grid Contour Strings.
- Select the distance grid from the correct data directory.
- Use the same Contour Parameters as the ranges used for the displayed grid.
- In the String Name dialog box, specify the Group, Map, Ident and Class for the String data.
