Earlier this month, some of the Top Global Mining Executives travelled to Italy for a Day of Reflection with the Mining Industry with members of the Vatican. Their goal? Focus on the environmental and social issues relevant to the mining and discuss better ways to operate in communities that are increasingly protesting the destructive impacts of mining, especially in Africa and in other developing regions of the world.
In attendance were Senior Executives from African Rainbow Minerals, Anglo American, AngloGold Ashanti, Areva, BHP Billiton, MMG and Rio Tinto.
The Day sought to address issues relevant to the industry including the current goals and challenges for mining companies and the industry and how decision-makers can best guide their companies towards both short- and long-term objectives. A number of fruitful conversations and discussions were reported to have taken place, and the activities initiated by the participants will be reported on in the coming weeks.
