McDermott Uses EXALEAD on the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to Break Down Data Silos

Vaseem Khan, Vice President of Global Engineering at McDermott, recently spoke about how his company is using EXALEAD and other solutions on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to analyze data for critical insights. Mr. Khan presented “Silo Busting: The Use of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform for Digital Project Delivery” at the 3DEXPERIENCE Forum 2019, held in Las Vegas in May.

Summary:

McDermott engineers and constructs massive projects for energy clients, including oil field platforms and other offshore installations all over the world, with many projects over $1 Billion. According to Ernst & Young research, projects over $1 Billion globally tend to run into cost and time overruns. Of these massive projects, 2/3 are not completed under budget and 3/4 are delayed. Project Development and Project Delivery are two of the top five reasons. The challenge for McDermott is that historically, its projects have been executed in silos—Engineering, Supply Chain, Fabrication—with little cross-communication or global oversight.

In order to ensure that the company can better deliver projects on time and under budget, McDermott’s strategy is to build a digital twin and digital workstream, breaking down silos and delivering real-time visibility across departments and projects. McDermott now uses every component of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to aggregate information and create a single source of truth across:

  • Project management
  • Fabrication & Construction
  • Engineering
  • Procurement
  • Commissioning & Completions
  • Quality
  • Planning

All stakeholders, within McDermott as well as vendors and subcontractors, have immediate visibility into the digital workflow process.

EXALEAD PLM Analytics on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform analyzes ENOVIA data to deliver real-time Project Intelligence, enabling McDermott to improve project planning globally, reduce the time required to identify problems and facilitate quick, corrective action. McDermott can answer critical questions, including:

  • What’s the progress on a project?
  • What is the progress of Mechanical Engineering on a project?
  • What is late?
  • What is on the critical path?
  • What do I have to do differently to achieve my end date?
  • Where am I trending to have a budget overrun?

One of the biggest reasons for McDermott’s cost overruns on big projects has been the lack of good information, but that problem now gone, thanks to the report visualization delivered by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a 3D model is probably worth a million words,” as Khan says. McDermott can take its 3D models, in virtually any format, import it into CATIA and then use the data to color-visualize status across the project, including whether a pump has been ordered, is under manufacturing, or under testing.

This visibility fosters transparency, accuracy and timeliness, enabling McDermott to make better decisions at each step in the project. Overall, McDermott is able to deliver projects faster while mitigating risks for significant savings globally.
