2015 Predictions: Major Changes Coming for the Global EP&U Industry in 2015

[Editor’s Note] As we flip the calendar to May, it means it’s time for the annual Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston, Texas. OTC is the premier event for the offshore energy production industry, with attendees attending from all over the world to discuss the latest technological advances, safety and environmental solutions, and economic and regulatory insights.Featuring massive exhibit halls and in-depth technical workshops spanning four days, there’s something for everyone in the energy industry, with more than 90,000 attendees expected. Our author, Stephane Declee, will give a presention on Industrial Plant Management on Wednesday May 6th…stop by and check it out!

The energy, process and utilities industry is in store for major, global transformation in 2015, most of which will be driven by technology’s ability to provide organizations with competitive advantages such as growth and more efficient, sustainable performance. We at Dassault Systemes would like to share our thoughts and predictions on which practices, processes and aspects of the industry organizations within EP&U should placing emphasis on.

Predictions for EP&U in 2015

Achieving a true competitive advantage will not be easy. Organizations must be able to identify and implement industry changes before they occur, or at the least, as they’re happening, all while managing said changes efficiently and effectively.

In 2015, the adoption and deployment of new approaches for managing large capital projects will be a key trend. The EP&U space has been suffering significant delays in these immense undertakings due to their overall hefty costs. However, thanks to new technologies – provided by 3DS – large scale projects will be completed with much more efficiency and effectiveness.

Furthermore, we can expect a plethora of new EP&U players to emerge from developing countries, specifically in the APAC region, where a revival of renewable projects are currently happening mainly due to healthy economic conditions and widely available technological advancements and innovative efficiencies.

Digital Technologies Driving Transformation

We can expect many in the industry to adopt the aforementioned changes quite rapidly and without much hesitation; however, in order for long-term success, the overall management of plant operations and efficiencies must undergo drastic transformation. Thanks to the convergence of digital technologies and physical operations, plant managers and operators now have the ability to complete tasks, such as conditions-based maintenance or virtually-aided operations, more efficiently and cost effective. While this transition will be difficult and arduous, we feel it necessary for achieving a competitive advantage.

EP&U Changes in North America

In North America, we expect the oil and gas space to benefit the most, which in actuality is driving a vast majority of investments and economic stability both domestically and abroad. We feel this global interest and emphasis on oil and gas will continue to drive growth in the sector throughout the next three years. Holistically, we expect the revival and sustained growth of global energy projects within oil and gas will continue to support, drive and maintain the global economic success.
