May the Fourth Be With You. Say the phrase out loud and you’ll notice it sounds strikingly similar to the famous Star Wars catchphrase “May the Force Be With You”…so it’s not a coincidence that May 4th has the honor of being crowned “Star Wars Day”.
The connection between May 4th and Star Wars dates back to May 4th, 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became Prime minister of Britain. Her party took out an advertisement in the London Evening News saying “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.” This clever way to honor Thatcher’s victory has now become the basis for an unofficial holiday. While the advertisement may not be the first time the phrase was used, it is certainly one of the earliest recorded usages, and is now credited with spurring the creation of Star Wars Day. The arrival of Social Media (#StarWarsDay) has propelled the day to even more awareness.
People celebrate by dressing up as a character, marathoning the first six movies and scouring the internet for information on the upcoming Episode Seven (The trailer of which was recreated in SOLIDWORKS by one fan). And others create models of Star Wars paraphernalia using our software. In fact, our SOLIDWORKS colleagues just posted instructions for designing your own lightsaber!
No matter what your favorite part of the Star Wars Saga is, there’s something for you. In SOLIDWORKS you can design a Star Wars Themed Chess Set or your own Storm Trooper Helmet. In our CATIA program, you can model a version of the Republic’s Star Destroyer. Too basic for you super-fans? Check out this entire library of 3D CAD Models of numerous Star Wars characters, ships, weapons and more.
However you decide to celebrate, may the fourth – sorry, the force – be with you.
