3D Simulations and America’s Favorite Pastime – Baseball Opening Week

For baseball fanatics, the new season started in late February when pitchers and catchers reported – for the rest of us, baseball season officially started on April 6th with opening day. But today, Bostonians are rejoicing – not only because it’s not only 70-degrees and sunny – but it’s also Opening Day at Fenway as the Red Sox prepare to take on the Washington Nationals.

Frequently referred to as “America’s favorite pastime” and with roots dating back as far as the 1800s, it seems like baseball could be called old-fashioned, but at the professional level, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Whether on the field or in the stadium, it is undeniable that this sport has adapted as technology has grown more sophisticated over time.

From the seats in the stadium to batting stances, pretty much anything can be computer simulated and improved. Our partners over at Stratasys can show you how to 3D print a baseball bat – that way you’re prepared to hit a SOLIDWORKS designed baseball in batting practice. We can show you how to create a 3D baseball, step-by-step using SOLIDWORKS. From the curve of the ball right down to the seams, it can all be simulated in our software.

If you don’t have a team to throw to you in batting practice, you might want to grab a pitching machine – luckily those are being made faster and better by JUGS though their use of SOLIDWORKS software as well.

If you’re more of a spectator than an athlete, feel free to take a seat on the sidelines – we’ve designed those too! Two years ago, SOLIDWORKS was used to design new seats for Boston’s own Fenway Park when they needed an update for their 100 year old ballpark.

We’re proud to be part of the innovations that keep driving baseball to be a better game, with better equipment, training and spectator experiences.
