David Rose: Internet of Things and “Enchanted Objects”

“If customers are to embrace the new era of connectivity, devices must be imbued with a touch of magic,” says MIT researcher and author David Rose.

Drawing inspiration from Greek mythology, fairy tales and various pop culture icons such as Lego and the Lord of the Rings, Rose delivered an explosive and entertaining presentation at the 2015 3DEXPERIENCE Forum in Boston. He discusses the Internet of Things (IoT) and its ability to enhance normal products into connected experiences.

At the 3DEXPERIENCE Forum in San Francisco, Rose builds upon his previous presentation and provides specific examples of how IoT has influenced product design over the years.

The effect IoT has on product design is something Dassault Systèmes is keenly aware of.  It’s forcing design teams to incorporate technology from outside their traditional areas of expertise (for example, teams with years of expertise designing refrigerators are now being asked to design refrigerators with WiFi and automated internet activity), and that means collaboration is key.  In order to enable a future full of enchanted objects, Dassault Systèmes is going to keep bringing people together to turn the promise of self-driving smart cars, auto-locking front doors, and smart healthcare into a reality.
