We hope everyone had a happy and green Earth Day on April 22nd. As a company that cites sustainability as one of our core principals, this day always holds a special place on the calendar…so in North America we commemorated the 45th annual Earth Day by kicking off our own 2nd annual Leaner & Greener Contest.
The goal of the Leaner & Greener Contest is for internal teams and departments to think up ways that their group can reduce our company’s environmental impact. We measure our environmental impact by six indicators: our carbon footprint, energy consumption, and electronic waste as our primary indicators, and secondarily, our water consumption, paper consumption, and general waste and recycling. There are some serious bragging-rights involved for the winner (in addition to fabulous prizes).
For example, in 2014, a team of sales and customer support staff from our SIMULIA brand submitted an idea that will lead to 450,000 fewer sheets of paper being used by our North America office. That’s a 15% reduction in our paper output across the region, and a savings of almost $100,000 a year! Their winning idea was to use tablet-based training manuals instead of paper documents. Our management and IT teams greatly support the idea, and we’re in the midst of rolling out tablet-based customer training in a pilot program across several offices.
Every day, we help our customers design more sustainable products, and we’re serious about our own commitment to sustainable innovation as well (and we have the industry recognition to prove it). We’ll let you know what ideas our employees have cooked up once we name a winner for this year’s competition.
