The Manpower Planning Puzzle: Southwest Airlines

Bryan Sharkey, Senior Director Workforce Planning & Projects for Southwest Airlines shares how they are able to effectively plan using DELMIA Quintiq to face the complex challenges facing the airline industry today. To understand the scale of the business, Southwest Airlines is the United States’ largest domestic air carrier, with 4,000 flights a day from 100 airports, serving approximately 130 million passengers annually. In 2013, with 21,000 employees the company was planning their workforce scheduling through Excel with a lengthy site by site approval process. Now Southwest’s workforce planning is configurable, adaptive and understandable with dashboards that visually show demand and productivity metrics designed into the planning model to deliver just in time staffing- the right people, in the right place, at the right time. This has resulted in cost savings and the ability to adjust to irregularities and schedule challenges including flight delays. Southwest can even run multiple workforce planning scenarios in advance to see which option would be the best fit. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic there are new roles and tasks created around increasing cleaning practices throughout the day and additional procedures to support distancing. Southwest can now adapt to meet this brand new labor requirement and deliver a safe customer experience with their optimized planning.

Hexcel Transforms Operations for Improved Efficiency and Cost Savings

Black carbon fiber composite product material Toni Hempstead Director, IT Manufacturing Solutions for Hexcel discusses how they use the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to optimize operations, adopt agile methodologies and deliver cost savings. Hexcel is a global producer in advanced composites technology for commercial aerospace, industrial markets, space and defense industries. Hexcel has 26 manufacturing sites dispersed globally that produce carbon fiber, preprint, honeycomb and engineered products through a diverse variety of manufacturing processes. The company’s additive manufacturing process creates high-performance 3D printed parts with significant weight and cost savings. It’s highly integrated supply chain demands full traceability for operators running the machinery and to quickly identify non-conformance issues. Hexcel must both identify and be responsive to preventative maintenance needs as well as scheduling and staffing requirements across the enterprise.
