Beginning with the first challenge in 1851, the America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sport and is yachting’s biggest prize. It all began when a group of businessmen from New York sailed the yacht “America” across the Atlantic Ocean to represent the United States at the World’s Fair in England. “America” won a race around the Isle of Wight called Her Majesty’s Cup and a glorious silver trophy, which became known as the America’s Cup, named after the winning yacht.
The story goes, as the America sailed past England’s Royal Yacht in first position, Queen Victoria – who was watching the contest – asked a royal attendant to point out who was in second place. ”Your Majesty, there is no second,” was the reply. Those four words still describe this magnificent international sporting event and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence.
Fast forward through 166 years of noble history and a world of innovation – the 35th America’s Cup Match begins on June 17th on the Great Sound of Bermuda. Emirates Team New Zealand will challenge the Defending Champions ORACLE TEAM USA with Skipper Jimmy Spithill at the helm.
The 2017 America’s Cup Class (ACC) boats are 15-meter-long (nearly 50-feet) wing sail catamarans, which are built to an America’s Cup design rule. Some of the design elements are fixed based on the rules and others are free to be customized – pushing the innovation envelope for maximum performance. ORACLE TEAM USA has deployed Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE platform for its design, collaborative innovation, simulation and testing.
