Solar Impulse 2 Finishes Its Journey in Abu Dhabi

The Solar Impulse 2 plane finished its historic journey around the globe by landing in Abu Dhabi on July 26, and it’s safe to say all of here at Dassault Systèmes were excited. After all, the team that created the Solar Impulse 2 utilized the 3DEXPERIENCE platform solution “Engineered to Fly” to create the aircraft.

We’ve been charting their journey CoQGvhFWgAAKMxqfrom the beginning. The 17-leg, 26,700 mile- flight, which used no fuel whatsoever, began in March of 2015 at the same airport in Abu Dhabi. You can view the flight’s journey through some of our blog posts, including frequent stops in the U.S. and our own marketing team seeing it up close in New York!

Dassault Systèmes is proud to be a leader in aviation innovation. Between our collaboration with Airbus Group, our long-standing relationship with Boeing, our partnership with aviation startups like Elixir and Joby Aviation, to our role in making Solar Impulse 2 a possibility, the future of air transportation is looking faster and more efficient. We spoke with Michel Tellier, VP of Dassault Systèmes Aerospace & Defense industry, about the bright future of the industry following the 100th annual Farnborough Air Show, and Mich predicted that solar power will soon be an element of power used by aircraft, and a large part of electrically powered aircraft. So we expect Solar Impulse’s pioneering mission to one day help pave the way for solar power to be incorporated in full production aircraft.

The question on everyone’s mind is: what’s next, and when? Now that we have seen the proof-of-concept for solar-powered aircraft, it’s time to shift our focus on what can be done with this historic revelation. BBC took a look into this question, and highlighted solar powered drones as concept with widespread appeal.

CEO & Vice Chairman of Dassault Systèmes, Bernard Charlès, congratulated the Solar Impulse team for their “milestone achievement – not just in aviation, but in demonstrating sustainable solutions for the future of our planet. Passion for innovation makes possible the impossible.”
