On September 22, Dassault Systèmes hosted the SOLIDWORKS 2016 product launch event at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate in Boston. With its iconic white walls and magnificent marble interiors within the full-scale replica of the U.S. Senate chamber, the location perfectly embodies SOLIDWORKS’ collaborative stance towards innovation. Among those present at the event were SOLIDWORKS executives, valued customers and business partners, and members from various media outlets.
Shortly after breakfast, the main session officially commenced in the Senate Chamber with an introduction led by SOLIDWORKS CEO, Gian Paolo Bassi.
“We are all together. We are a community,” said Bassi, who stressed the importance of maintaining an “ecosystem” where “great designs happen.” And in upholding that ecosystem, SOLIDWORKS 2016 will feature a new hybrid cloud component, SOLIDWORKS Online Edition, which will allow users to access their designs on any device that has internet capabilities, including low-powered Chromebooks.
Bassi’s introduction was followed by a detailed product overview of SOLIDWORKS 2016 by Senior Director of Product Management, Kishore Boyalakuntla, who outlined some key enhancements to SOLIDWORKS 2016, including:
- Breadcrumbs—just one of the many productivity enhancements, this feature allows users to quickly and easily access any model without viewing the Feature Tree and reduce mouse travel with the Breadcrumb in the cursor. For instance, a simple design that used to take almost 3 minutes can now be done in less than 2 minutes.
-
Mate Controller—similar to a game controller, easily and intuitively create and animate complicated assembly motion with calculation, control, and visualization features.
-
SOLIDWORKS Model Based Definition Enhancements—quickly and accurately define, organize and publish manufacturing specifications directly in 3D to avoid 2D drawing ambiguity and downstream discrepancies.
-
SOLIDWORKS Visualize — generate high-quality graphics that take designs from concept to consumer to help users make better design decisions, with the “camera” for SOLIDWORKS and other CAD data.
The rest of the session featured more details of the upcoming software by a number of SOLIDWORKS executives and was finally concluded with individual presentations from some of SOLIDWORKS’ customers and partners, HP, Skully, Strong Arm Technologies and BOXX Technologies, where each representative shared how they have used SOLIDWORKS to enhance their products and services. Stay tuned for some exclusive video interviews with these customers and partners coming soon.
As an “innovation platform” and not just a product, SOLIDWORKS 2016 will continue to make great designs happen.
