The Technology in Motion (TIM) 2017 exhibition and conference, hosted in Detroit, is the largest mobility event in North America and puts a spotlight on the deepening ties between the automotive world and the high-tech industry. There are myriad examples of how the digital age has come to – and largely been embraced by – the Detroit auto industry. Bluetooth connectivity, once seen as forward-looking feature, has become table stakes for competing in today’s feature-laden auto marketplace. In-car WiFi connectivity and digital infotainment displays are quickly following suit. And widespread acceptance of electric cars and semi-autonomous features is breaking into mainstream consumer consciousness, with the promise of fully autonomous vehicles creeping closer every day.
This level of technical innovation would’ve seemed unrealistic a mere 10-15 years ago…but here we are. Whether or not we’ve reached the tipping point of upheaval in the automotive industry, one thing is clear – change has arrived in the transportation industry, and businesses that don’t embrace it will be left behind.
TIM 2017, held from Sept. 6-8th, brings together vehicle manufacturers, suppliers, technology companies, startups, and government agency to talk about what’s next in the auto industry. Our own Ingeborg Rocker, VP of Strategy & Digital Transformation of Cross Industry Teams, will bring her expertise on virtual simulations of urban cities to the event and deliver a keynote address September 8th. Dassault Systèmes’ vision of modeling and simulating our cities and planet – creating a ‘virtual twin’ of complex settlements – creates a continuous loop of data that can help cities identify transportation challenges, and help urban planners create a new generation of transportation solutions.
