Sustainable mobility solutions are driving innovation in the automotive industry, as customers want cleaner driving solutions. This demand is extending into the world of competitive racing. France’s Spark Racing Technology (SRT) was selected by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to design and build the first 100% electric powered vehicle for Formula E racing. Before SRT, there was no E Formula racing; it did not exist.
SRT, in collaboration with many partners, successfully produced 40 cars for racing by relying on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to design, assemble and deliver. Now, a second generation of design, called Spark SRT05e, also known as the Spark Generation 2 — or Gen2 — has been developed.
One challenge that the SRT team overcame between first and second-generation design is the development of a higher power density battery. The first generation battery did not last long enough and drivers had to stop mid race and switch cars to one with a fully charged battery. By using CATIA for design on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, huge progress has been made by making components and thus the entire car much lighter. Now the cars have batteries that enable them to run the full race without charging.
SRT is exploring future opportunities outside electric car racing by applying electrical vehicle know-how to other sectors, including an electric motorcycle for urban mobility needs.
