A new stop motion feature film about Leonardo da Vinci is in the works. The team behind “The Inventor,” including director Jim Capobianco, Pixar veteran and Academy Award nominated writer, are inviting the public a chance to be featured in the movie by leveraging their 3D skills to give life to Da Vinci’s drawings. And our 3DEXPERIENCE Lab team is excited to help make this happen!
The goal is to digitally reconstruct in 3D DaVinci’s inventions from his codex – ancient manuscript books, with handwritten contents – and turn them into 3DEXPERIENCES. The team selected ten codices for interested participants to select from. The options are posted in the Open Codex Community and include a roasting jack, a swing bridge and a paddle boat.
Once a person decides on what they want to tackle, they design that codex in 3D using one or more of Dassault Systèmes’ apps, including SOLIDWORKS, CATIA, and xDesign. For people who don’t currently have any of these solutions, Dassault Systèmes is offering free access to xDesign.

This is just the latest in the challenges sponsored by the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab. These recurring worldwide competitions aim to foster innovation and nurture young talents.
During the recent 3DEXPERIENCE World 2021 event, the head of the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, Frédéric Vacher, held a conversation with Jim Capobianco about the film and the challenge. Watch below to get your inspiration going. We can’t wait to see what you design!
