High workloads and physically challenging conditions have long been an issue for laboratory professionals. According to Danish manufacturer Flow Robotics, around half of medical lab technicians carry out the same arm movements for at least a quarter of their working day as they collect, prepare and analyze test samples. With a growing demand for laboratory testing such repetition could lead to more cases of work-related injuries and possible rising stress levels among staff.
That’s why Flow Robotics is paving the way for a more sustainable lab set up, where humans and robots work in parallel to reduce physically demanding pipetting tasks, minimize the risk of human error and contagion, and operate more efficiently. It has developed the flowbot™ ONE, a versatile and affordable liquid handling robot that can be used for numerous laboratory applications, such as pipetting live viruses and handling multiple samples simultaneously.
“Our robots work alongside people, so they don’t get overburdened and develop strain injuries or become exposed to live virus samples,” said Steen Vester, chief technology officer at Flow Robotics.
Orders for the affordable, user-friendly liquid-handling robots continue to grow at pace as more laboratories become aware of the potential to speed up their processes and better support their staff. To keep up with demand, Flow Robotics has scaled up production and turned to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on cloud to bring order and visibility to its product development processes.
