It is an exciting time for cities, with mayors, state governors and citizen stakeholders forming new coalitions to share, explore and implement approaches for a more sustainable ecosystem. Episode 4: Tomorrow’s Sustainable Cities completed Dassault Systemes Science in the Age of Experience 2020 virtual event examining the issues confronting today’s urban environments and offering solutions to help confront them.

This session was hosted by Simon Huffeteau, Vice President Construction, Cities and Territories industry group, Dassault Systèmes who observed that there has been a shift in responsibilities to the cities that are now driving the charge, doing more with less, to make sure that our cities are safe, inclusive and sustainable.
The first guest on the program was Marijana Novak, Data Strategist at Circle Economy, which specializes in developing knowledge and data platforms to help their customers navigate the path to a circular economy. They have gathered over 3,000 examples of innovations and startups for circular economy that have been and are being successfully implemented around the world.
“Progress is being made toward a circular economy, designing out waste at a systems level, regenerating ecosystems and keeping products in use for longer,” said Marijana.
The majority of people live in over 4,000 cities and towns around the world. Cities are the center of consumption, but also innovation. However, there is no global urban data infrastructure to share information, leverage interdependencies and learn from each other’s solutions.
“Bringing the data together,” said Marijana, “harmonizing that data and presenting it in simple visuals so that diverse stakeholders can understand it, is the foundation of implementing and operationalizing a circular economy strategy.”
Next, François Amman, Co-founder & Co-president, Aden Group joined the session and described a consortium of companies called AKILA Care that is connecting the dots to offer and construct complete turnkey hospitals that can be deployed anywhere in the world in a matter of months. François described how the group streamlines process and increases efficiency. The first construction was the hospital in Wuhan, China that was built near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
AKILA Care comprises China State Construction Engineering Corporation (cSCEc) for construction, Sinopharm for medical equipment, Aden for operations and maintenance, Chendong Housing for modular building, Saint-Gobain for high-tech materials and Dassault Systèmes for 3DEXPERIENCE. Its mission: to reinvent healthcare and make long-lasting infrastructure available across the globe.
François Amman from Aden Group and Philippe Obry, Director, Business Innovation & Transformation and Ossian Heulin, Client Executive, Business Diversification from Dassault Systèmes’ went into more detail about leveraging process knowledge from other industries like aerospace and automotive and digitalizing information from all the suppliers to create an intelligent interactive model of the hospital.
“Discussing with countries around the world, we have realized that the needs were beyond infectious disease,” said François. “There were demands to cover many more facilities, so we have been designing additional modules that can easily be plugged into the digital twin so we can tailor-make the hospital based on the requirements of the different situations.”

Next, we took a deeper dive into simulations that have been used to help ensure venues are optimized to keep people safe from exposure during the pandemic. Jean-Paul Roux, Dassault Systèmes’ Vice President, Sales for EMEAR described how we worked with the Philarmonie de Paris to understand the air flow in the building and concert hall for its reopening in September 2020. They wanted to make sure that it was safe for the public, staff and musicians.
With a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using the SIMULIA brand applications, they were able to demonstrate in a series of animations the airflow through the concert hall from the top of the room down. Social distancing, mask wearing and tuning the ventilation system provided optimal mitigation, clearly shown with the animations. Jean-Paul then explained how this same simulation approach could be used to measure airflows around industrial areas in cities to mitigate pollution.
Emmanuel Vanoli, Senior Business Consultant for Dassault Systèmes joined the episode to present work that he was personally inspired to do when his grandmother was infected and in a hospital in France.
Using his expertise and Dassault Systèmes’ simulation tools and 3DEXPERIENCE platform, Emmanuel modeled the hospital, measured the airflow and traced contaminated particles in space and time to identify the risk. It was found that simply opening windows in strategic areas on the wing and wearing masks in central areas would mitigate risk and reduce chances for infection.
Emmanuel is something of a hero at Dassault Systèmes. His grandmother has recovered and is doing well; and after his analysis at her hospital, he did more simulations requested by other hospitals to mitigate risk in patient rooms, emergency rooms and intensive care units. For his work, Emmanuel was recognized with an award by a public citizen initiative group.
“I think that Dassault Systèmes is a committed company,” said Emmanuel. “We have a role to play in this fight against COVID-19 and to help people, the medical staff, to identify risk and fight against it.”
