Founded in 1972, the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) teaches students to explore some of today’s greatest urban challenges including reimagining cities or designing for sustainability.
SCI-Arc faculty member and professional architect Kerenza Harris uses the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to transform her students’ learning experience. For example, the parametric design capabilities embedded in the platform enable students to create intelligent models that retain their histories while integrating new information. Students start with simple forms and shapes, and can then develop them into complex projects: a seamless progression from an inspired idea to a production-ready design.
The platform’s cloud-based delivery model enables mobile access and collaboration for everyone involved in a project. Students are no longer stuck in labs but can work on their projects anytime, anywhere. The cloud allows instantaneous collaboration with their teacher or classmates.
In one hands-on project, for example, SCI-Arc students are using the platform’s CATIA application to translate 3D models into virtual reality to create a blueprint for a livable, sustainable city on Mars.
SCI-Arc sees itself as an incubator for a new generation of problem solvers. The 3DEXPERIENCE platform enables SCI-Arc students and staff to reinvent how architecture is taught, conceived and created. As students become fully immersed in the technology, they are able to collaborate and innovate at a new level.
