Glance up to the roof of a production plant in Milan and there’s far more to the concrete frame than meets the eye. Undulating beams perfectly mold together to form a complex and imaginative roof structure that is both lightweight and strong. The entire section has been 3D printed. Every part has been designed, simulated and optimized in such a way that only the minimal amount of material is used without compromising on strength. It makes highly complex structures as easy to produce as solid slabs of concrete.
The company responsible for the entire construction process is Italian engineering and design firm IDeCOM. It has been expanding its capabilities and growing the engineering consultancy and services side of its business since it implemented the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
“The redesign project coincided with the implementation of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform,” said Andrea Bassani, founder at IDeCOM. “The architectural design of the building’s roof involved complex shapes. We wanted to find new ways of producing these elements, and reduce costs and material consumption in the process. The customer asked us about the possibility of implementing new fabrication techniques. It was an ideal opportunity.”
For IDeCOM, this is just one example of how it’s taking advantage of the most advanced methodologies and technologies to find a new way of constructing and managing complex buildings and infrastructures. Harnessing the power of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform and the experiences derived from other industries, the company is developing new, more sustainable fabrication techniques. It is also offering its customers full support in specialist areas such as façade design.
