Health and wellness has perhaps never been in the spotlight more than it has in the past couple of years. Research shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a newfound focus on wellness and almost half of consumers now consider it a top priority in their daily life. It’s a market that is currently worth more than US$1.5 trillion a year, and growing.
As demand for fitness products such as bikes – both traditional and electric – continues to surge, sport manufacturers and suppliers are racing to deliver what consumers want. e-bikes have another advantage than wellness: are people are also looking to cultivate more sustainable lifestyles, they’re using e-bikes as new mobility alternative to cars.

They are taking advantage of the rich 3D design and simulation features within the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to gain a competitive edge.
Creating lighter, stronger and faster superbikes
Spanish design and engineering firm Cero Design designs and builds its own UNNO range of superbikes. Each frame is handcrafted from sheets of premium carbon fiber, which are ultra-light, strong and resilient, but also complex and expensive to make.
Cero uses the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to try out new composites layouts digitally before committing to a physical prototype. The team benefits from the ability to check manufacturing feasibility, consider constraints before entering production, and reduce the number of costly prototypes they need to make.
“The latest bike we worked on only required two prototypes, compared to the 14 or 15 prototypes that we’d usually make,” said Cesar Rojo, founder of Cero Design.

Accelerating the launch of a foldable e-bike
Korean firm INNO Design has developed a foldable e-bike with an innovative wheel and integrated battery from Korean startup Hycore. To ensure that the product could be delivered quickly without sacrificing quality, INNO Design CEO Youngse Kim focused on improving design processes within the company.
“Virtual design is a very important process before real production,” Kim said.
Designers used the virtual design and simulation capabilities in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to transform manually sketched ideas into 3D geometry for virtual testing.
“It’s amazing how easily we can draw shapes using the sketching tools on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform,” said Jin-gi KIM, product design team manager at INNO Design. “It’s actually like modelling with clay.”
With all the design tools it needs within a single environment, INNO Design is working more productively and refining design ideas and concepts before committing to the tooling and manufacturing stages.
