Mobile Data – The Next Generation is Coming

We are counting down to the 3DEXPERIENCE Modeling and Simulation Conference taking place in Novi, Michigan on September 18-19th! We are excited to bring together the Dassault Systèmes design, modeling and simulation communities to drive engineering discovery.  We sat down with one of the presenters at the conference, Christopher Jones, a Solution Consultant with SIMULIA, to talk about his presentation, “Simulation for 5G – Quantifying Human Exposure to RF Signals.”

Thank you for speaking with us. First of all, what is 5G in telecommunications?

5G, the fifth generation of mobile network technology, will become the backbone of the cellular system in the next decade. New antenna technology and frequency bands will allow higher data rates and let more devices be used in a given area.  5G is going to be a game changing technology for every industry imaginable, not just smart phones but also autonomous vehicles, medical devices, industrial equipment, etc.

What challenges does 5G design pose?

There are two main frequency bands for 5G – those below 6 GHz and those above. Frequencies below 6 GHz are well understood by microwave engineers, but the higher frequencies (often called millimeter-wave because of their short wavelength) have very different propagation behavior to the conventional radio frequencies. The transmitting range is much lower and even thin layers of material such as walls or even windows can stop the transmission dead in its track. As a result, antenna placement on handset devices is more critical than in the past in terms of your hand potentially obscuring the transmitter/receiver.

Why is human exposure important?

5G devices will be all around us very soon, and we need to make sure that we understand their interaction with the human body. The amount of radiated power that a human user may be exposed to from a cellular device, is highly regulated. There are varying standards around the world and manufactures must ensure local compliance, or their devices may be banned from sale. Well established standards from 4G are not equally applicable to 5G and our presentation will discuss why and what that means for BioEM simulation.

How do SIMULIA products help 5G engineers?

The SIMULIA electromagnetic simulation tool CST Studio Suite is perfectly positioned to simulate 5G devices and antennas both individually and in conjunction with the user’s human body thanks to the library of human models. With CST Studio Suite, users can optimize the placement of antennas on the device, ensure they aren’t blocked by the human body when in use, and calculate the power absorbed by body tissues to make sure they stay safely within the limits.
