Accelerate Product Development with Abaqus on the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud

As products get more complex, simulation models are moving from analyzing single components to the more complex, closer to lifelike models of assemblies, sub-systems and systems, requiring greater computing power than ever before. Structural simulations performed using the Abaqus implicit solution technique are now using models of up to 100M degrees of freedom (DOF). For dynamic applications, such as crashworthiness, that use the Abaqus explicit solution technique, model sizes are reaching 350M DOF.

These increased model sizes demand increased computing power, which could mean a significant investment in both hardware and software – if not for the cloud. The 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud offers easy access to on-demand computing power for all types of simulation workflows, and Abaqus performance on the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud is as good as, if not better than, typical on-premise deployments. Easy access to increased computing capacity also enables even more design changes to be evaluated through “what-if” design optimization studies, further improving feedback to design programs based on the performance of their products.

For small-to-medium model sizes, users can benefit from utilizing larger core configurations on the cloud, significantly reducing simulation turnaround time. For medium-to-large Abaqus simulations, the cloud may be the only solution, especially if users lack high-end hardware or have access to limited local HPC capacity. Cloud HPC has been tuned for optimal Abaqus performance to provide the best possible turnaround time without any user intervention.

Users can choose from two different license models, or use a combination of the two to meet their Abaqus computing needs exactly. The first is the token based model, a reusable compute license, suitable for sustained use, that allows users to run a certain number of jobs concurrently for the licensing term. This type of license is best for any regular compute workloads. The second is the credit based model, a consumable compute license suitable for pay-per-use cases, as well as burst compute needs, that allows users to run as many jobs as possible until the credits are consumed. This license is best for low-frequency, high-priority variable workloads.

The benefits of leveraging the cloud for Abaqus simulations include:

  • Innovate without hardware barriers
  • Simulate with more details
  • Meet compute needs exactly
  • Avoid HPC set-up times in a pre-configured cloud environment
  • Securely store simulation models and results on the cloud and access them from anywhere
  • No need to acquire or maintain HPC assets

Running Abaqus on the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud can reduce simulation times by 95 percent compared to running them locally, and can significantly reduce product development times.
