Digital Design from Concept to Certification with SIMULIA PowerFLOW 2020

Dassault Systèmes is pleased to announce the release of SIMULIA PowerFLOW 2020, with the theme “Digital Design from Concept to Certification”.

What can you accomplish with PowerFLOW 2020?  It is now possible to:

  1. Guide the design through all development phases.
    • A brand-new capability called DesignGUIDE™ enables automated, multi-disciplinary simulation-based design guidance in a highly-interactive and intuitive environment.
  1. Accelerate development with shorter turnaround time for high fidelity simulation.
    • PowerDELTA enhancements provide a significant reduction in geometry preparation time and a single solution for preparing all PowerFLOW meshes.
    • Next-generation simulation architecture enables faster turnaround time for simulations.
  1. Meet all certification requirements.
    • Simulating with deformed rotating treaded tires provides a scalable solution for certifying with all tire variants.

Manufacturing industries such as the transportation and mobility, aerospace and defense, and industrial equipment industries must adapt to today’s business drivers to remain successful.  The rise of electric, connected, and autonomous vehicles puts pressure on manufacturers to make innovative, rapid, and effective decisions.  Manufacturers are constantly under pressure to deliver on their quality promises and meet strict regulatory requirements, such as the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) and Greenhouse Gas regulations, all the while staying on budget and launching the vehicle on-time.  Consumers are constantly expecting more from the customer experience, such as high fuel economy or range that matches what is advertised, and low wind noise in the real world.  Finally, manufacturers are having to produce more vehicles with customizations to offer a more personalized experience for consumers.

As manufacturers try to respond to these industry drivers, they are faced with three key challenges in their vehicle development process.  First, manufacturers often make suboptimal design decisions at the concept and engineering stages of vehicle development, since it can be difficult to connect simulation analysis to design changes in time.  In addition, styling and performance goals are often in conflict, as are the performance goals of different engineering departments, so design decisions made in isolation cause problems downstream in the development process.  Second, while the pressure is to get to market faster, long development times are required to meet performance, quality, and regulatory requirements across every aspect of vehicle engineering.  Third, physical testing is too time-consuming, risky, and expensive to be a scalable solution for certifying all design variants, leading to a high risk of delay in vehicle development.  This is especially clear for car manufacturers offering many different tire and wheel combinations.

To address these industry challenges, the new release of PowerFLOW 2020 provides key benefits across the vehicle development cycle, enabling Digital Design from Concept to Certification.  PowerFLOW 2020 enables manufacturers to guide the design through all development phases, accelerate design development with shorter turnaround time for high fidelity simulation, and meet all certification requirements.

Guide the Design Through All Development Phases

PowerFLOW 2020 introduces DesignGUIDE, a brand new capability allowing manufacturers to interactively explore the impact of design changes on performance, and achieve both engineering and design requirements.  DesignGUIDE connects design to performance faster by enabling integrated analysis of geometry changes and performance.  It facilitates accurate, data-driven decisions by providing design guidance based on data from highly-accurate PowerFLOW simulations.  The design guidance is presented in the form of an intuitive color-map on the vehicle surface.  With DesignGUIDE, you can consider multi-disciplinary trade-offs for any key performance indicator quantified by the simulation, across domains.  The interactive design environment enables collaborative decision-making with the design studio to balance styling and performance.

Accelerate Development with Shorter Turnaround with High Fidelity

PowerFLOW 2020 comes with two major highlights from PowerDELTA for the model preparation.  First, PowerDELTA eliminates the need for third party tools by providing a complete and single surface and volume meshing preparation solution from design concept to optimization.  Second, significant enhancements made to CAD and Mesh editing, as well as usability and robustness improvements, have resulted in up to 25% reduction in model preparation time and have also helped in optimizing the design cycles and rework. For example, a full car model can now be prepared in 4 days, compared to 5 days with PowerDELTA 2019.

The next-generation PowerFLOW simulator in PowerFLOW 2020 takes a major step forward in performance to accelerate design evaluations of fully detailed engineering designs.  The new simulator is robust, streamlined and has performant infrastructure, providing the foundation for higher performance on demanding industrial applications. PowerFLOW 5-2020 offers a significant reduction in simulation wall-clock time, up to 30% for isothermal simulations and up to 20% for thermal simulations, while PowerFLOW 6-2020 provides more modest reductions.

Meet All Certification Requirements

PowerFLOW 2020 enables simulation with deformed rotating treaded tires, which will give faster insight to real-world performance of deformed tires.  The deformed treaded tire geometry can come from a 3D scan of a vehicle under load or from an Abaqus structural simulation.  The PowerFLOW simulation of the deformed tire improves accuracy of flow around wheels by modeling the correct contact patch and tire dynamics as it rotates through that contact area.  This enables manufacturers to understand the effect different tires can have on performance early in the design cycle, and evaluate the impact of different tire geometries on vehicle aerodynamics to meet the certification requirements of WLTP.
