In early 2020, we launched the SIMULIA Champions program. The 2020 SIMULIA Champions are the inaugural team of brand ambassadors, whose expertise and passion position them to advance the future of simulation technology. In this series of blogs, we introduce some of our individual SIMULIA Champions, finding out more about their history – and future – with the technology.
Jaewon Kim is a Research Specialist in the 3M Corporate Research Lab in St. Paul, Minnesota. 3M is a large, far-reaching corporation that specializes in products ranging from adhesives and tapes to dental and health care. According to Kim, the material manufacturing company is known for its innovation and technology. His responsibilities involve developing new technology platforms. Currently he is working on millimeter wave material development for 5G and 6G, as well as wireless charging technology and metamaterial research.
Since he began graduate school in 2001, Kim has worked with CST Studio Suite for his research and development. In particular, he uses CST Microwave Studio for his work with 3M, which uses the software on a worldwide basis.
Kim graduated from Korea University with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, after which he came to the United States to work on his PhD at the University of Minnesota. His PhD topic was metamaterials, which are engineered composite materials used for novel applications in fields including electronics, optics, antenna and radar design, and more. Kim describes the field as “very interesting” to him, and he has had the chance to study it closely not only through his academic research but through his work with 3M, where he was hired after completing his PhD.
Engineering was a natural career path for Kim, who likes collaborating with others as well as thinking independently to solve problems.
Since he joined 3M 12 years ago, Kim has delivered more than 100 invention submissions as well as more than 30 patents. While working with the company, he has gotten the chance to work with researchers in multiple different areas, which he appreciates. Overall, he enjoys his work and is happy with the career he has chosen.
“I’m doing what I like to do now, and, fortunately, that is pretty well aligned with our company’s directives,” he says.
Outside of work, Kim enjoys outdoor sports such as playing soccer, golf, tennis and skiing in the wintertime. He is also a soccer coach for a youth group whose members include his children, a son and daughter ages 11 and 15. He enjoys interacting with people, and while he was at school he acted as a leader to the Minnesota Korean Graduate Student Association. Now that he works for 3M, he is a “kind of chair” for the company’s Korean employees.
SIMULIA is pleased to welcome Jaewon Kim into the 2020 SIMULIA Champions program and excited to continue working with him in the future. Stay tuned to the blog to learn more about our other 2020 SIMULIA Champions.
