In early 2020, we launched the SIMULIA Champions program. The 2020 SIMULIA Champions are the inaugural team of brand ambassadors, whose expertise and passion position them to advance the future of simulation technology. In this series of blogs, we introduce some of our individual SIMULIA Champions, finding out more about their history – and future – with the technology.
Yuming Wu is an Associate Professor at Beijing Institute of Technology’s Beijing Key Laboratory of Millimeter Wave and Terahertz Technology, School of Information and Electronics. Founded in 1940, the university produced China’s first television transmitting equipment, first TV channel, and first low-altitude radar altimeter.
As a researcher, Wu’s interests include characterization, design, and fabrication of electromagnetic metamaterial/metasurface and advanced functional devices for optical/Terahertz/microwave frequency applications. She also works with flexible printed antenna and electronic devices for wearable and medical applications. Before joining BIT, she worked as a Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. She has been using SIMULIA products for 15 years.
Wu’s interest in engineering started in childhood, when her father, a university professor, would take her to his lab.
“This lab is the educational experiment and measurement room for electromagnetic field theory, microwave technique, RF circuits and devices, and antenna propagation courses,” Wu explains. “Even though I didn’t realize they were actually the radio spectrometer, rf system, and microwave transceiver upon that time, I played with those devices and got familiar with them on the table.”
Wu was skilled in physics measurement while pursuing her bachelor’s degree at Harbin Institute of Technology. She joined the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as a student and is currently a Senior Member of IEEE.
Describing her work as “meaningful and responsible,” Wu is excited to produce helpful research and results, rather than just being a consumer of existing knowledge. Engineering research can be tedious and difficult, she says, but extremely rewarding once the problems and difficulties are overcome. The solid foundation she built during her study of electromagnetic field theory and microwave engineering has been helpful.
“In general, engineers deal with applications of theory (applying fundamental concept to arrive at useful results) by completing considerable designs,” she adds. “It is very important for an engineer to base the analysis and logic behind these designs on first principles.”
Outside of work, Wu likes to experiment with makeup, exploring different colors and textures and applying them to create her own designs.
“It is another creative work and, in some ways, it is similar to an engineer’s design,” she says.
SIMULIA is pleased to welcome Yuming Wu into the 2020 SIMULIA Champions program and excited to continue working with her in the future. Stay tuned to the blog to learn more about our other 2020 SIMULIA Champions.
